Overview

  • Dr. Valentine is a professor of medicine specializing in lung transplant in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Following his fellowship training at Louisiana State University and his residency training at New Orleans’ Charity Hospital, Dr. Valentine entered into and completed a pulmonary fellowship at Stanford University Hospital. Dr. Valentine he has held faculty positions at the LSU Health Sciences Center, the Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Center, the University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Internal Medicine, and UAB, where he currently serves. Dr. Valentine has been Chief Editor of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation LINKS e-Newsletter since 2011.

    Research Overview

  • Dr. Valentine’s academic research is focused on the role of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis, managing patients with cystic fibrosis, improving outcomes for heart-lung and lung transplant recipients, genetic influences on the immunopathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, managing CMV Disease in transplantation, defining and managing obliterative bronchiolitis/bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome in the lung allograft, pulmonary complications in the immunocompromised host, and managing septic shock. Dr. Valentine’s clinical interests include critical pathways in managing lung transplantation and advanced pulmonary diseases, quality assurance and process improvement in heart and lung transplantation, cystic fibrosis, diffuse parenchymal lung diseases, and Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM).
