Dr. Sánchez-Luna serves as an Interventional & Metabolic Endoscopist and Assistant Professor Of Medicine at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine.
He is one of the very few interventional endoscopists in the United States to have undergone formal training in bariatric and metabolic endoscopy via the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) endoscopic training award and to be triple-board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Obesity Medicine.
Dr. Sánchez-Luna has a clinical interest in endoscopic surgery as applied to bariatric/metabolic endoscopy (including intragastric balloon placement, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, and revisional therapies for weight regain such as transoral outlet reduction -TORe-), natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery -including peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the treatment of achalasia and Zenker's diverticulum-, postsurgical complications, pancreaticobiliary disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (via transoral incisionless fundoplication -TIF- and other antireflux endoscopic therapies), and use of a full-thickness resection device (FRTD) for tumors of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract.
Some of the unique procedures he performs include endoscopic-ultrasound (EUS)-guided gastric access for temporary endoscopy (GATE) via lumen-apposing metal stents to facilitate interventions such as an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), EUS-guided gallbladder & bile duct drainage, EUS-guided gastroenterostomy in patients with malignant gastric outlet obstruction or afferent limb syndrome, and EUS-guided portal pressure gradient (EUS-PPG) measurement.
Finally, Dr. Sánchez-Luna has a personal and academic interest in how healthy qualities of the mind impact the well-being of people!
