Human C-reactive protein is protective against fatal Streptococcus pneumoniae infection in mice

Academic Article

Abstract

  • In this paper we present evidence that purified human CRP is in fact protective against infection with S. pneumoniae in mice. Although we have been able to obtain protection with small amounts of CRP, we failed to observe protection with serum amyloid P component (SAP), which is structurally similar to CRP but does not bind PC.
