Emerging fungal resistance

Academic Article

  • As advances in medicine have occurred over the past several decades, we have seen an increase in immunocompromised patients and a corresponding increase in the incidence of invasive fungal infections. Knowledge of emerging fungi and susceptibility patterns is becoming more necessary in the treatment of patients with these significant and often fatal diseases. With the recent standardization of methods for in vitro susceptibility testing, our knowledge of susceptibility patterns among fungal organisms has greatly increased; however, important data on in vitro susceptibility and correlation with patient outcomes are lacking. It is to be hoped that as our understanding of emerging fungal resistance and resistance mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level advances, our antifungal drug development and treatment strategies in patients with invasive fungal infection will improve.
