A three component velocity probe and integrated data-logging system.

Abstract

  • The purpose of this work was to develop a three component velocity probe with a dedicated, portable data acquisition system and computer. The system is intended for use in traversing large power plant duct systems in which gas flows may be characterized by strongly three dimensional velocities. The approach taken here was to select an available probe, pressure tranducers, data logging module and a compact computer; to develop required software and procedures for calibration, data acquisition, and flow anlysis; and to assemble an integrated system fully calibrated and validated for use in field testing. Preliminary wind tunnel calibration and testing of a small scale probe shows that the system resolves duct flow velocity vectors over angle ranges exceeding plus or minus 40 degrees and velocity magnitudes from about 10 ft/s to 200 ft/s (3 m/s to 60 m/s).
