Body Composition Evaluation

Chapter

Abstract

  • Body composition plays a critical role in the health of humans. This chapter focuses on a few of the more commonly used and/or available methodologies to determine body composition in human research, including anthropometry, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), hydrodensitometry (HD), air displacement plethysmography (ADP), dual -energy X -ray absorptiometry (DXA), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR). Because the emphasis of this chapter is to discuss research methods, we chose not to discuss any method that may pose harm to healthy research subjects, such as computed tomography with its associated radiation exposure. © 2012 International Life Sciences Institute.
