Microgravity solidification of immiscible alloys

  • This paper addresses coupled growth in immiscible alloy systems and the ability to maintain interface stability during directional solidification of hypermonotectic alloys in order to form aligned fibrous microstructures. Particular emphasis is placed on the experimental requirements to avoid interfacial and convective instability, sedimentation, ampoule wetting, alloy-ampoule reactions, free surfaces and thermal end effects.
