Bioreactor for development of tissue engineered cartilage constructs

Abstract

  • To determine how chondrocytes interact with polymer matrices under a well defined flow regime, a bioreactor was developed based on a concentric cylinder geometry. The bioreactor was designed in such a way that it provides for a uniform shear stress environment, large growth area and the ability to incorporate 3D constructs. As a result, the key mechanical and biochemical parameters that directly influence the in vitro development of cartilage were determined.
