Since the first observed failures of polyethylene in total knee replacements, researchers have documented wear patterns in an effort to understand the failure mechanisms associated with total knee replacements (TKR). This study documents five types of wear observed in polyethylene components from retrieved TKR, as well as gross deformation characteristics. Pertinent patient data and the type of polyethylene are also noted. Results show significant occurrence of pitting, delamination and abrasion in the majority of the components studied, consistent with previous reports.
