This communication describes a very simple, rapid and inexpensive point-of-care diagnostic test for sickle cell disease (SCD) that can conclusively differentiate between blood samples from normal healthy individuals, sickle cell trait carriers and SCD patients using the characteristic blood stain patterns produced by each sample on paper. © 2013 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
