Smoking cessation and substance use modification in cardiovascular disease

Abstract

  • Smoking and other forms of substance abuse can significantly increase the risk for cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular events, and also reduce the impact of the effective treatment of other cardiovascular risk factors. The consequences of tobacco, alcohol, cocaine and other selected substance use on the heart and cardiovascular system will be discussed. Current recommendations and clinical evidence for the treatment of smoking and substance abuse will be described with case vignettes used to outline specific details of treatment. In addition, treatment of substance abuse as it relates to cardiac patients will be discussed© 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
