Abstract

  • Astrocytes, a subtype of glial cells, are primary homeostatic cells of the CNS. They populate both gray and white matter of the brain and of the spinal cord. Astrocytes create the brain environment, build up the micro-architecture of the brain parenchyma, maintain brain homeostasis, store and distribute energy substrates, control the development of neural cells, synaptogenesis and synaptic maintenance, and provide for brain defense. Human astrocytes are in general much larger and more complex compared to astrocytes of other mammals.
