Professional Development for Multicultural Education: A Teacher-Directed Approach

  • This paper describes the implementation of a teacher-directed professional development program that was designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of participating teachers in the area of multicultural teaching. Through the examination of permanent products, concept maps, and teacher interviews, the impact of this program on teacher conceptualizations of multicultural education and teacher implementation of these ideas is examined. Teacher responses to the self-directed format of this professional development program also are explored.
