Cortical computations using relative spike timing

  • Despite considerable research, there is still no generally held consensus as to what the neural code is in the cerebral cortex. We know from basic principles that, as regards the communication of information from one region of the cortex to another, it is only the pattern and timing of action potentials that is important. Thus, while analog processing plays a strong role in the processing of information for locally connected neurons, as far as the rest of the brain is concerned, it is only the number and timing of action potentials in the projection neurons that matter.
