Iodate poisoning: Early effect on regeneration of rhodopsin and the ERG

Academic Article

Abstract

  • Sodium iodate was injected systemically into dark adapted rabbits, half of which were then light adapted. Iodate had no effect on the rhodopsin content of dark adapted rabbits nor upon the a- or b-wave of their ERGs during 10 hr in the dark; however, regeneration of rhodopsin and the c-wave of the ERG were abolished within 1 hr of injection. Thus, the observed effects of iodate can be attributed to interference with the functions of the pigment epithelium within an hour of injection. © 1973.
