Anesthesia for percutaneous mechanical assist devices

  • Patients presenting for mechanical assist devices represent by far the most critically ill patients an intensivist or anesthesiologist can take care of. Unfortunately, the heart failure epidemic continues to rise and an encounter with these patients is unavoidable for an anesthesiologist for either cardiac or non-cardiac surgery. In this chapter we discuss the different indications for mechanical assist devices placement, their types, their complications and their anesthetic management with a focus on devices inserted via the percutaneous route.
