Whether FGF23 is a risk factor that associates with cardiac pathologies and cardiovascular mortality, as suggested by a variety of clinical studies, or additionally acts as a causative factor that induces cardiac injury, as more recently indicated by cell culture and animal studies, is under debate and the center of many ongoing experimental studies.
