Two haplotype mismatched live donor renal transplantation in diabetics

Academic Article

  • Although the results of cadaver donor transplantation continue to improve, there are simply too few cadaveric kidneys for all patients, diabetic or nondiabetic, requiring transplantation. Moreover, because of rapidly deteriorating eyesight or other complications, many diabetics do not have the luxury of being able to undergo dialysis while waiting for a cadaveric kidney. For this reason, living related donor (LRD), and more recently, living, unrelated donor (LURD) transplantation is considered first for all patients in our transplant unit. Here we report the results of 123 consecutive live donor transplants on type I diabetics.
