Jaundice, liver ultrastructure, and congenital pyloric stenosis. A study in infants

Academic Article

Abstract

  • Five patients with jaundice and congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis were studied. Electron microscopy of liver biopsies revealed dilated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in four of the cases, one of which also had a similar alteration in the pyloric muscularis. The degree of ER dilatation correlated directly with the duration of vomiting and inversely with the level of serum bilirubin prior to surgery. No association between the ER change and various hypotheses for the mechanism of jaundice associated with pyloric stenosis could be established.
