Each has the ability to establish latency and reactivate in response to a stimulus. Resulting disease can range from merely symptomatic to life threatening. New antiviral drugs have been and are being developed, and these drugs, combined with polymerase chain reaction for detection of virus, have led to improvement in detection and management of the herpesviruses.
