Viability assessment of the preserved heart: a brief review of current experimental techniques

Academic Article

  • A knowledge of the viability of a potential donor organ is essential for the success of clinical heart transplantation. The search for a suitable test confirming viability involves exploring the value of simple histological or metabolic tests which preclude irreversible tissue damage, and more elaborate studies which evaluate the function of the isolated heart. Current experimental work in both these fields is briefly reviewed.
