The preparation and characterization of some phosphinoacetic acids, salts, and esters

  • A general method is outlined for the preparation of compounds containing the -P(CH2COOY)n grouping, where Y - alkyl group, H, or Na and n = 1–3. This method is based on the methathesis reaction between esters of trialkylstannylacetic acids and phosphorus compounds containing a P-Cl bond. In particular, this paper reports the synthesis of the compounds (C6H5)3-n P(CH2COOY)n where n=1–3. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, melting and/or boiling points, and infrared and proton and phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data. Protonation constants for (C£H) PCHoCOOH and C, H_P(CHnC00H) were determined in ethanol-water and water, respectively. Synthesis and characterization of (CH_)„ P(0)(CH2COOCH3) are reported also. © 1975, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
