Abstract

  • A two-dimensional analytic model of a simplified configuration of the gelled-pad electrode applied to human tissue was developed. Parametric studies showed that the temperature distribution in the underlying tissue was a function of electrode geometry, along with gel electrical and thermal properties. Results of a simulation using typical electrode geometry and gel electrical and thermal properties revealed similar temperature distributions to those measured on human subjects. The model predicted the typically high peripheral and low central temperature rises in addition to a decrease in peripheral temperature rise with increasing gelled-pad area.
