Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) include cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), implantable cardiovascular monitors, and implantable loop recorders (ILRs). This chapter outlines the general principles of follow-up of CIEDs, with a specific focus on pacemakers. Follow-up of ILRs is also briefly discussed. Various sources of electromagnetic interference encountered by the CIED patient in the medical and non-medical environments are briefly reviewed, along with suggestions to mitigate the adverse effects from these interactions. Management of CIEDs in other special situations such as in the perioperative period, and in patients nearing end of life or requesting withdrawal of therapy is also summarized. Finally, there is a brief discussion on device advisories and their management.
