Microscopic analysis of a thermal Brownian motor

  • A Brownian motor by hard disk molecular dynamics was investigated to calculate its properties, including drift speed and thermal conductivity, using microscopic theory. It was observed that in Brownian motion, with average zero speed, exponentially decaying velocity correlates, while linearly increasing mean square displacement. The motion of the motor along the direction was found to be in a single degree of freedom which allowed energy transfers and thermal contact between the compartments. Thus, it was found that the motor provides the rectification of non equilibrium outside the scope of linear irreversible thermodynamics.
