The newer cephalosporins: Aztreonam and imipenem

  • Over the last 5 years, several new cephalosporin antimicrobial agents have been introduced in the United States, most of which are administered orally. In this article, the pharmacokinetics, microbiology, clinical uses, and toxicities of these new agents are described and compared to older preparations. In addition, this discussion includes agents that are not yet available in the United States, but are anticipated to be released soon. An overview of aztreonam and imipenem is also provided.
