Pneumococci: Immunology of the innate host response

  • Despite the development of vaccines and antibiotics, Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) continues to be a major cause of human morbidity and mortality throughout the world. In recent years our understanding of how the host innate immune system recognizes and responds to pneumococcal infection has advanced significantly. Herein, we highlight some of the key features of the innate response to the pneumococcus. © 2010 Asian Pacific Society of Respirology.
