The pathogenesis of hyperuricemia and gout in sickle cell anemia

Academic Article

Abstract

  • A patient with sickle cell disease complicated by gouty arthritis is reported. Studies with 14C labeled uric acid and glycine, and discrete renal function tests indicate that both overproduction of uric acid and diminished excretion of urate due to decreased nephron mass contributed to hyperuricemia.
