Biocatalysis: Unmasked by stretching

Abstract

  • The mechanical stretching through soft materials facilitate in switching on and off of the biocatalytic activity of enzyme loaded responsive layer by layer and used to trigger biochemical reactions under mechanical action and therapeutic applications. The study has demonstrated a new approach for creating mechanically responsive materials based on layer by layer assembly to catalyses an enzymatic reaction on demand. The functionality and properties of the multilayer materials can easily be manipulated by simple changing the environmental conditions, where the unique properties of film can be used to engineer microcontainers. The work has great potential in the design of responsive bioengineered materials aimed at triggering and modulating chemical and biochemical reactions by mechanical reactions and with varied applications.
