A study of the age distribution, attrition rate, and migration of presently registered optometrists was made to assess the availability of optometric manpower in California. Using various population projections and optometric training assumptions the numbers and population ratios of optometrists were projected to the year 2000. The ratio of optometrists to population will decline markedly even with the lowest population prediction. Suggestions are offered to fill the optometric manpower gap. © 1969 American Academy of Optometry.
