• Michael Bertram, PhD, MBA, is the Associate Director for Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center and an Associate Professor in the UAB Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology. Previously, Dr. Bertram was the Administrative Director for the UAB Center for AIDS Research. His scientific background (PhD in Molecular Biology & Genetics), significant experience with the NIH P30 Center Grant mechanism, and knowledge of academic research management offers a unique combination of skills in the biomedical research field. Currently, Dr. Bertram manages the $15 million operational budget of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Center. In the past years he co-wrote and managed successful applications for greater than $2 million in ARRA funding through the NIH. In addition, Dr. Bertram oversees the fiscal and regulatory operations of the translational and clinical trial research activities in oncology of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. His leadership activities at UAB have led to the implementation of administrative improvements resulting in efficiencies that have saved thousands of man hours a year. He is currently a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators, Society of Research Administrators International and the Cancer Center Administrators Forum. Dr. Bertram received his PhD from Cornell University and his MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
