    Research Overview

  • Dr. Bridges' research interests include the role of B lymphocytes and autoantibodies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly immunoglobulin gene expression and antibody repertoires. In addition, his research has focused on pathogenesis of RA, and genetic influences on RA susceptibility and severity, particularly in African-Americans, and on biomarkers of treatment response in RA.
In his role as Associate Director of the INvestigationS In Gout, Hyperuricemia, and comorbidiTies (INSIGHT) Center of Research Translation (NIH/NIAMS P50 AR060772, K. Saag, PI), he is involved in strategic planning and execution of the projects, training and outreach, and pilot projects. He also serves on the Executive Committee and as Director of the Pilot Component of the UAB P2C National Resource Center for High-Impact Clinical Trials in Medical Rehabilitation, called the Rehabilitation Research Resource to Enhance Clinical Trials (REACT) Center led by Dr. Marcas Bamman. He also serves as co-PI with Dr. Bamman on a clinical study of progressive resistance exercise training plus adjunctive functional mobility training after total hip or knee arthroplasty to restore muscle mass and mobility function in patients with osteoarthritis and TWEAK (TNF-like weak inducer of apoptosis)-mediated muscle inflammation.
