Overview

  • In addition to his responsibilities as Faculty Athletics’ Representative (FAR) for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Dr. Messina is the endowed Alumni and Friends Professor of Accounting in the Collat School of Business. He has been on the faculty since 1993.

    Frank received his doctorate in Accounting from Mississippi State University in 1993, a master’s in professional accountancy at MSU in 1990, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of West Alabama in 1986.

    Frank has four times been awarded for UAB Excellence in Classroom Teaching; has received the UAB President’s Excellence in Teaching Award; twice received the Loudell Ellis Robinson Excellence in Accounting Teaching Award, NSAC Silver Pen Research Award and Kinder Morgan/El Paso Energy Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, along with several other teaching and research honors. He recently received the NSAC’s Silver Bowl Lifetime Achievement for his service to the accounting profession (See https://www.uab.edu/news/people/item/10745-accounting-professor-receives-lifetime-achievement-award ).

    Dr. Messina publishes and edits extensively in tax and accounting journals and has taught a variety of seminars and courses around the world over the past many years.

    Frank currently serves as the only FAR in the nation on the NCAA Division 1A Football Oversight and Football Competition Committees. He has served as a member on the NCAA Committee on Academics, where he served on the data subcommittee that handles the academic progress rate and graduation success rate, and has chaired the NCAA’s Progress Toward Degree Committee. He has also served on the NCAA Division I Awards, Benefits, Expenses and Financial Aid Cabinet and currently serves as a board member of the 1A Faculty Athletics Representatives group. He is very active in C-USA as well.

    Dr. Messina and his wife, Natalie, have four sons, Taylor, Thomas (In Heaven), TJ and Teddy.

    Research Overview

  • Frank has been the editor of The Cooperative Accountant for over 20 years published quarterly by the National Society of Accountants for Cooperatives. He is also on the editorial board of the New Accountant Collegiate editions and the New Accountant High School Editions. His research interests are mainly in taxation.
