Overview

  • Eta S. Berner, Ed.D. teaches in the Master of Science in Health Informatics Program and is Director of the UAB Center for Health Informatics for Patient Safety/Quality. Dr. Berner is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics , the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. She has published articles in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Academic Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. She is the editor of a book entitled Informatics Education in Healthcare: Lessons Learned as well as the book Clinical Decision Support Systems: Theory and Practice, now in its third edition. Dr. Berner has served on several national external advisory committees related to Clinical Decision Support, has been a World Health Organization consultant, has served in leadership positions at the national level in professional informatics and health professions educational organizations, and has been on advisory committees and study sections for both NIH and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
    Dr. Berner is currently a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association and the Journal of Healthcare Information Management.

    Research Overview

  • Dr, Berner's research interests include evaluation of health informatics interventions, the use and impact of clinical decision support systems for diagnosis and treatment, development and evaluation of distance learning interventions in healthcare settings and innovative strategies for informatics education.
  • Teaching Overview

  • Dr. Berner currently teaches the overview course in health informatics (HI 640) and the course on Clinical and Administrative Systems (HI 602) to both MSHI and students in the Certificate Program in Clinical Informatics. Both of the these courses are certified by Quality Matters, a national organization that assesses the quality of online courses. In addition, she serves as academic advisor to students preparing their capstone projects and teaches the one of the capstone preparatory courses.
