Dennis Pillion has been a diabetes researcher and educator at UAB since 1979. In 2011 he retired from full-time work to assume a position as a part-time Professor. He currently lectures on Pharmacology to first and second year students in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Optometry. He also teaches a course to undergraduate students in the Science and Technology Honors Program. As a volunteer, he serves as an advisor to the Alabama camp for children with diabetes and he is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the international Diabetes Education and Camping Association.
Dr. Pillion previously studied insulin binding, delivery and action. He has patented through the UAB Research Foundation a series of excipients that can be used to deliver drugs nasally. This patent is licensed to Aegis Therapeutics, LLC in San Diego, CA.
