Overview

  • I am a public health scholar and social scientist who conducts studies designed to reduce health disparities, improve health equity, and inform thoughtful policy that is good for humanity in resource-constrained settings, both in the United States and abroad. My scholarship focuses heavily on understanding behaviors of underserved - often stigmatized - populations that are at high-risk for experiencing discrimination, including but not limited to sexual and gender minorities, religious minorities, racial minorities, and immigrants. My research has been funded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health (SOPH), UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health, National Institutes of Health (NIH/NICHD and NIH/NIMH), The Women’s Fund of Birmingham (TWF), Aga Khan Foundation, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Way of Alabama, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
