Amanda Dorsey, MSHI, FHIMSS, is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Services Administration and teaches Health Information Technology (HIT) courses across three different programs. Prior to UAB, she worked in a variety of healthcare settings for more than 12 years prior to joining UAB in 2006. Amanda began her career at UAB Health System Information Services (HSIS) department and performed in a variety of roles including technical writer, business analyst, manager of strategic and regulatory planning and finally as the enterprise project manager for the health system’s HIPAA Project.
In 2001, she joined Phoenix Health Systems in Gaithersburg, Maryland as a Senior Consultant. While at Phoenix, she worked as a project manager on both long and short-term engagements including system selections and implementations, contract negotiations, risk assessment and disaster recovery planning, organizational strategic planning and HIPAA preparedness and training. Most recently, she worked at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham as a member of the Physician Application Team as a project manager on an Emergency Department Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Amanda is the former Program Director of the UAB Master of Science in Health Informatics program where she transitioned the program to an online/cohort model format, and revised the existing generalist curriculum to a core/track model , where students can specialize in tracks of User Experience or Data Analytics. She also created a online, graduate certificate in Clinical Informatics for working clinicians interested in pursuing formal training in Informatics.
Amanda currently serves on the Alabama HIMSS Chapter Advocacy Committee, and also served as the President and Board Member of the same chapter. She is a Fellow in national HIMSS and a past member of the Board of Directors for UAB’s National Alumni Society.
