A description is given of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Electrical Engineering electrical engineering program. The authors discuss the structure of the design-based curriculum. The electrical engineering courses were structured to provide a progressive, design-based instruction that begins with an introduction to problem-solving techniques. The problem-solving activities are followed by an exposure to elementary design from a hardware perspective. This foundation is followed by several structured design experiences. When students reach courses in their specialization, they are exposed to the design of intermediate and large systems. The program culminates in an individual, major design thesis.
