The Renin-Angiotensin System

  • Plasma Renin Activity as a Screening Procedure in Hypertension Two approaches to the use of peripheral plasma renin activity as a screening test for hypertensive disease have been taken: to hospitalize the patient and impose strict control of dietary sodium in an effort to be able to relate his response to a rigidly defined set of normal criteria; and to allow the patient to remain ambulatory and on an ad lib sodium intake and rely on his 24-hour urinary sodium excretion to normalize his response. Stimulation or suppression tests give more information about the patient's renin reserve and the responsiveness. © 1974, Massachusetts Medical Society. All rights reserved.
