The behaviour of a vortex in the inhomogeneous rabbit myocardium has been studied. Drift of vortices along the boundary of an inhomogeneity has been found. The speed of drift ~4 cm/sec has been established which is ~5 times less than the speed of propagation of the excitation wave. It is shown that the direction of the drift is determined by the vector ω × VR (ω is the angular speed of rotation and VR is the gradient of the refractory period); collision with the boundary leads to the disappearance of the vortices. © 1991.
