Epigenetics of Human Disease



  • Epigenetic processes that modulate gene expression but do not involve DNA sequence changes can have a major impact on disease development, and perhaps the most important aspect of epigenetics is that epigenetic aberrations are often readily reversible. The predominant epigenetic mechanisms consisting of DNA methylation, chromatin modifications, and noncoding RNA have vast and long-term effects on health, and alterations in the epigenetic machinery in these processes can often contribute to disease. Numerous advances in epigenetic-based disease prevention and therapy are rapidly developing and could revolutionize medicine and clinical practice.
