Spun prestressed concrete poles. Past, present, and future

Academic Article

Abstract

  • Spun concrete poles are being used in increasing quantities throughout the world. Their applications include decorative street lighting, distribution poles, rail electrification, supports for high voltage transmission poles, communication towers, and wind turbine support structures. Spun prestressed concrete poles offer many advantages in comparison to poles made from other materials, including non-prestressed reinforced concrete poles. Due to the improved high-strength concrete and steel materials coupled with the residual tensile strength inherent with prestressing, the poles are relatively elastic, corrosion resistant, attractive, maintenance-free, and long lasting products.
