To the Editor: The article by Lane et al. in the August 25 issue1 enlarges the spectrum of immune dysfunction in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). I question, though, the diagnosis of AIDS in 4 of their 12 patients (Patients 1, 3, 5, and 9). With no known etiologic agent or diagnostic test for AIDS, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) case definition for surveillance2 is the accepted working criterion for AIDS and is cited by Lane et al.
