Why more psychology majors should study abroad

Academic Article

Abstract

  • A critical facet of the field of psychology is the study of behavior; one critical aspect of understanding human behavior is an understanding of cross-cultural behavioral differences. Experiential learning obtained while embedded in a foreign culture during a study abroad experience offers an ideal way for students of psychology to appreciate and understand cross-cultural behavioral differences, but psychology students study abroad at a rate lower than most academic majors. As university administrators urge internationalization of their campuses, psychology faculty should explore ways to make study abroad a more appealing and educational experience for psychology majors. We discuss how study abroad can benefit psychology majors and recommend ways to increase participation of psychology majors in study abroad experiences.
