Synthesis, NMR characterization, and molecular structural studies of a series of ortho-metalated aluminum-nitrogen dimers

Abstract

  • The thermolysis of 1:1 mole ratio reaction mixtures of R3Al/HN(CH2Ph)2, where R = Me, Et, Prn, Bun, Bui and of a 1:2 reaction mixture of Me3Al with HN(CH2Ph)2 yield ortho-metalated aminoalane dimers as products. These dimers were characterized by elemental analysis, 13C and 1H NMR, FT-IR, and single-crystal X-ray determination. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the influence of R on the ease of ortho metalation, structural parameters of the Al2N2 ring, and the nature of the alkyl chain conformations in solution and the solid state.
