Novel γ-phase of titanium metal at megabar pressures

Abstract

  • The crystal structures of titanium under high pressure was observed at volumes of less than 12 angstrom per atom. This phase stability was due to the specific spectral shape of the electronic density which favored the bcc structure. The high pressure behavior of tetravalent Ti enabled the understanding of the behavior of more complex actinides under pressure.
