Electron screening and kinetic-energy oscillations in a strongly coupled plasma

Abstract

  • The equilibrium of strongly coupled ions in an ultracold neutral plasma produced by photoionizing laser cooled and trapped atoms was investigated. The electron screening effect was observed to improve the equilibrium ion temperature. Numerical simulations using a Yukawa ion-ion potential were performed to study the screening effect. It was also observed that the ion kinetic energy exhibited oscillations that are characteristic of equilibrating strongly coupled plasmas.
