Nature and optical properties of N1- centers in LiF crystal

Abstract

  • Experimental results are reported on formation of N1- centers in LiF either by trapping electrons on neutral N1 centers or by thermoinduced reorientation of F3- centers from the close packed triangular array to the "stretched out" arrangements. The nonlinear saturation properties of three color center crystals (LiF:N1-, LiF:F3- and NaF:F2+*) as well as the efficiency of phase conjugation in LiF:N1- crystals caused by the saturation of absorption have been investigated experimentally. An efficient passive Q-switching of the alexandrite laser utilizing a LiF: N1- crystal has been demonstrated.
