In summary, the candidate's eligibility to receive islet xenografts is very similar to that currently being considered for islet allografts. The primary medical indication would be hypoglycemic unawareness, as well as glycemic lability and possibly progressive diabetic complications. In islet xenotransplantation, islet mass is not considered such a critical factor, thereby allowing weight criteria to be relaxed. Lastly, allosensitized individuals represent a potential recipient group that may be uniquely suited for a trial of islet xenografts. Copyright © 2008 Blackwell Munksgaard.
