Using absorption imaging to study ion dynamics in an ultracold neutral plasma

Abstract

  • The optical absorption imaging of an ultracold neutral plasma was investigated for ion dynamics. The ion absorption spectrum was observed to be Doppler broadened determined by images which provided quantitative measure of ion kinetic energy. The ions were rapidly heated as they equilibriate during first 250 ns after plasma formation which were observed for particular plasma conditions. The ions were left on border between weakly coupled gaseous and strongly coupled liquid states due to equilibration process.
